Looking at abstract paintings is like solving a puzzle. But there is some pleasure that you can have a chance to spread your wings of imagination while seeing them. The paintings of an artist Uihyun Park give you that pleasure. The thick and strong lines with prime colors on the canvas make the meaningful figure before you know. Then they disappear abruptly from your mind and again make different shapes on your mind. This is such a similar view of art like Marcel’s learning from Elstir in “Finding the Lost Time” of Marcel Proust; beauty is from not the objects or contents that an artwork contains but the point of view that an artist has.
All strokes of a brush are very active and spontaneous. His touching of lines is so natural that there are no boundary lines among the river, the field, the village, and the mountain. But while you are looking at the painting, you can see their appearance on the canvas as they are in a distance. The artist Park expresses wailful memories in his deep heart through nature onto the canvas. You can see that his point of view for nature is of “Mul-ah-il-che,” which means that external objects and self mix together and become one in a body. Thus before you know it you’ll find out that you become a part of nature in his paintings.
The famous Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi composed “the Four Seasons” in 1725. As you know, it is a set of four violin concertos; Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. As Vivaldi expressed four seasons with musical instruments, the artist Uihyun Park did all seasons on his canvases. There are blooming springs, stormy summers or summertime on a beach, colorful autumn, and snowy winters. But his scenery has a regional characteristic feature. It contains Korean four seasons with his memories. It will be the wonderful experience if you have a chance to listen to Vivaldi’s the Four Seasons with his paintings.
