So-Yeop Shin Jeong-Gyun is a renowned calligrapher and conceptual artist celebrated for her unique ability to convey healing and hope through her art. Known as the “Healing Words Artist,” she travels across Korea and the world, creating works that touch people’s hearts and inspire positivity.
Shin’s journey as an artist began in the 1980s when she started her career in traditional calligraphy. She studied under some of the most revered Korean calligraphy masters, including Il-Jung Kim Chung-Hyun, Cho-Jung Kwon Chang-Yoon, and Han-Byeol Shin Doo-Young. Over the years, she has gained recognition for her exceptional skills, earning accolades such as five-time awards at the Korean Art Exhibition and selection as an invited artist in the prestigious Dong-A Art Exhibition.
Her signature project involves inscribing “Healing Words” on large stones or monuments placed at village entrances or central locations. These words, often poetic and profound, aim to provide emotional comfort and inspiration to those who encounter them. For Shin, art is more than a visual medium—it is a bridge that connects hearts, fosters understanding, and offers solace.
Internationally, Shin has showcased her works in countries including France, Guatemala, Canada, the United States, and China. Notably, she was the first Korean artist to hold a solo exhibition at the Carcel Museum in France, solidifying her status as a global cultural ambassador. Domestically, her works are permanently displayed in notable locations such as the National Gugak Center, the Unification Research Institute, and Yulgok Shrine.
Shin’s calligraphy is more than a traditional art form; her distinctive “Healing Calligraphy Style” infuses each stroke with deep meaning and emotional resonance. She embraces the nickname “The Woman Who Scribbles” for her playful yet profound approach, which makes her art accessible and relatable to people of all ages and backgrounds.
